Area Sports Briefs: Salisbury tennis season ends in regional final

Salisbury’s tennis team lost 5-1 at Lake Norman Charter in Huntersville on Tuesday in the 2A West Regional final.
Salisbury finished 15-2.
Defending state champ Lake Norman Charter is 17-0 and will play today for another state title in Burlington against East champ N.C. School of Science & Math.
Two of Tuedsay’s matches lasted nearly three hours. Sophomore Maria Capito won for the Hornets, while sophomore Julia Honeycutt lost in those marathon matches.
The loss ended the careers of Salisbury seniors Kayla Honeycutt, Grace Steinman, Kathrun Rusher and Emily Capito.
The other three state championships were held on Sunday, with Bishop McGuinness, Marvin Ridge and Panther Creek earning state titles.

Prep soccer
Salisbury hosts Monroe’s Central Academy of Technology & Arts (CATA) on Thursday at 6 p.m. in a third-round matchup.
Top-seeded Salisbury won 2-1 against ninth-seeded CATA in the regular season.
The other 2A West matchups are Hendersonville at Polk County, Monroe at defending champ Newton-Conover, and Trinity at second-seeded Chase.

In the 3A playoffs, third-seeded Carson hosts sixth-seeded Asheville at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
The other 3A West matchups are North Forsyth at top-seeded Ashbrook, Weddington at Hickory, and Cox Mill at second-seeded Statesville.

Prep signings
Local athletes who have reported signing dates to the Post include:
Baseball
Hunter Shepherd, Greater Cabarrus Homeschool Stallions, will sign with Catawba today.
Cross country/track
Zachary Marchinko, Carson, will sign with Charlotte on Thursday.
Softball
Taylor Martin, West Rowan, will sign with Catawba on Friday.
Kaylee Cook, A.L. Brown, will sign with Catawba on Monday.
Golf
Grace Yatawara, Salisbury, will sign with East Carolina on Nov. 20.

College volleyball
Lenoir-Rhyne won 25-18, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-21 against Catawba on Tuesday in Hickory.
The Bears are 19-7 and 17-4 in the SAC. Catawba is 14-14 and 11-10.
Bri Howard paced Catawba with 16 kills.
Brooke Redmond tallied 14 kills for Lenoir-Rhyne.
Emma Pope (South Rowan) had six digs for the Bears.

Golf
The USGA announced Charlotte Country Club as the host site for the 2018 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. The dates are Sept. 22-27.

NCHSAA
Anna Vess of Asheville’s A.C. Reynolds and Jeremy Brown of Broughton High in Raleigh are the NCHSAA Performance of the Week award winners.
Both earned their second individual state cross country titles during rainy, difficult conditions in Kernersville.
