Annie Symonds celebrates 100 years

SPENCER — Ms. Annie Symonds of Magnolia Gardens, Spencer, turned 100 years old on Dec. 7.

Ms. Symonds’ daughter Bonnie spoke with Michelle Hunter, activity director at Magnolia Gardens, about her life history.

Annie was born in Mocksville, to a large family. A pair of twins died, so she grew up with 11 siblings.

Her father, Thomas Edward Mock, owned the now-famous Fulton-Mock Blackmer Dixon mansion on Fulton Street.

Annie graduated from Salisbury High School. At some time, she lived in northeast Washington state before moving back to Mocksville.

She married and had four children. Her daughter describes her as a fabulous seamstress, a good mother and a hard worker. She would sew Bonnie’s dance costumes and all her children’s clothes. At a later time, she worked as a telephone switch operator.

Bonnie shared that Ms. Symond told her 20 years ago that “she would live to be a 100 years old.”
