SALISBURY — A China Grove man stole money from a vendor at the Rowan County Fair, then hid inside a toolbox on the back of a pickup, according to police.

Salisbury police officers charged Joshua Wade Dixon, 34, of the 100 block of Brewer Lane, with misdemeanor larceny and felony possession of stolen goods.

The incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds, 1510 Julian Road. The vendor told police he had placed $190 on a back counter while he tended to a customer. The cash was what he used to give change to customers.

The vendor said a man leaned over the counter, grabbed the money and ran toward the exit of the fairgrounds. The vendor was able to give officers a description of the suspect, including a tattoo on his neck that included the name “Wade.”

Officers patrolling the fairgrounds found Dixon hiding in a toolbox on the back of a truck. The truck did not belong to him but was parked inside the fair gates. Someone saw him duck into the toolbox, police said.

Dixon remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $2,500 secured bond.

Dixon has past convictions for misdemeanors that include larceny and driving while license revoked.
