Catawba College plans Class Act dinner, fundraiser to support women athletics

SALISBURY — The Catawba College Chiefs Club and Catawba Athletics will sponsor the first Class Act dinner March 15 to support women’s athletics at the school.

Selena Wilkes Tory will be keynote speaker for the Class Act fundraising dinner for women athletics at Catawba College March 15.

The fundraiser will start with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m. and a dinner with speaker Selena Wilkes Tory from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Peeler Crystal Lounge on campus.

Organizers hope to sell more than 200 tickets.

Tory was a star volleyball, basketball and softball player for Catawba College and graduated in 1996. She was inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

After traveling the country as a member of the professional Futures Golf Tour from 1997 to 1999 and 2002 to 2004, Tory retired from golf and earned a master’s degree in business, with a concentration in human resources and organizational management, from the New York Institute of Technology.

She has had two successful cochlear implant surgeries to assist her hearing. Today, she lives in Williamsport, Maryland, and is the founder and chief executive officer of several businesses including Elmwood Farm Hospitality Group; Mattress By Appointment; Multrio Inc., a computer software company serving small businesses; and Port 44 Real Estate Development Group, which revitalizes historic properties for modern business and luxury residential spaces.

Tory serves on several boards, is active on her farm and still plays golf on occasion.

Erin Summers, a sports sideline reporter based in Raleigh, will emcee the Class Act fundraising dinner for women athletics at Catawba College March 15.

Summers is a play-by-play broadcaster for Game Day Production Crew of GoHeels Productions in Chapel Hill and has been a play-by-play voice for UNC spring sports broadcasts on ESPN/ACC Network Extra, covering softball, baseball, and men’s and women’s lacrosse.

Summers is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with degrees in journalism and dramatic arts.
