Area Sports: Catawba men win 6th in a row

SALISBURY — Catawba’s men’s basketball team won its sixth straight game on Wednesday, beating  Coker 90-76 in a South Atlantic Conference game at Goodman Gym.

Catawba (17-6, 12-5) made 11 3-pointers, connected on 17 of 21 free throws and outrebounded the visitors,  55-34.

Coker (5-16, 4-14) scored the first bucket, but the Indians responded with a 9-0 run and led the rest of the way.

Catawba led 41-33 at halftime and led by as many as 21 in the second half.

Devin Cooper (18 points), Marcell Haskett (17), Daquan Lilly (13) and Ace Carter (10) scored in double figures for the Indians. Lilly and Ben Zemonek had eight rebounds each.

Chandler Lindsey scored 20 for the Cobras.

Catawba plays at Carson-Newman on Saturday.

Milestone for Klutz

A.L. Brown boys basketball coach Shelwyn Klutz logged his 300th career win on Tuesday when the Wonders edged Robinson 70-68.

Klutz, an A.L. Brown graduate who played collegiately at Mars Hill,  is in his 23rd season at the helm of the Wonders.

His 2004-05 team went 20-7 and won the North Piedmont Conference. His 2018-19 team went 21-8, losing in the third round of the 3A state playoffs. This season’ team is 16-6 and won the Dale’s Sporting Goods Sam Moir Christmas Classic at Catawba.

Women’s hoops

Pfeiffer topped Meredith 72-64 on Wednesday despite 28 points by Meredith freshman Kate Perko.

Perko is the daughter of former A.L. Brown and Wake Forest star Amy Privette Perko.

JV girls hoops

Camden Corley scored 19 points to lead Carson to a 53-26 win against West Rowan on Tuesday.

Makayla Johnson scored 11 for the Cougars. Kaalyn Wynn and Victoria Story stood out on defense.

Brooke Kennerly led the Falcons with 13 points.


Mid. school girls

Mooresville defeated Erwin, 34-6.  Mooresville was led by Myonna Butler, Kensley Ford and Elizabeth Jones. Scorers for Erwin were Cailey Ludwig (4) and Sadie Featherstone (2).


Corriher-Lipe won 47-14 against Knox. Addie Plott scored 11 points. McKenzie Menius had 10, and Hannah Atwell added seven for the Yellow Jackets.

Local golf

GARS members played at the Revival at the Crescent.

Low ‘A’ Fight player was Phil Cauble with a net of 68.61. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Rick Fior with a net of 68.85. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Ben Moore with a net of 65.88.  Low ‘D’ Flight player was Tommy Seamon with a net of 61.64.

Cauble shot an 80 for low gross score. Seamon was low net winner.

Shamrock Run

The 32nd annual Shamrock Run will be held in Mocksville on March 14.
