Talkback, what online readers are saying about …

… Storm brings tornadoes, flooding, high winds

There was severe damage along Irish Potato Road and Phaniels Church Road near Pless Road. Entire roofs were blown off and trees snapped.

— Jeanne Dennis

Salisbury man found with pills, cocaine following traffic stop

Posting someone’s personal information before there is a trial and conviction is pretty messed up. I know this is common practice, but it always seems unfair.

— Rena Nicole

John Hood: What if Bernie Sanders wins NC?

You seem scared.

— Vann Thomas        Powell

Letter: Don’t merge Knox Middle, Overton Elementary

Close Knox and Overton and spread the students to North and surrounding schools. Why build new school with enrollment so low at other schools? The school board didn’t have any problem closing Woodleaf and shipping students to Cleveland.

— Teresa Sides Eller

… Police Department works to ensure makeup of officers …

Should the 911 operator ask for victim race, color and sex in order to assign the “right” officer to respond? Sounds Orwellian. All I ask for is a professional officer regardless of race, creed or color. Social engineering does not work.

— James Bostwick

Letter: As a conservative, what’s it all about?

As long as poverty exists, education continues to fail our children, the right to vote is suppressed, taxes remain unfair to the lower class, health care is not affordable and our U.S. Constitution is under attack, there will be a Democratic Party.

Democrats believe in betterment for all not just a few..

— George W Benson

Letter: Shame on Burr, Tillis for impeachment vote

Perhaps if the case against Trump would have actually been proven, they’d have voted to impeach. It is innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around.

— Maria Rossi

Shame on the Democrats for the political and legal sham they demonstrated throughout the congressional impeachment hearings.

Democrats stated that if it was not biparitsan, they would not proceed with the impeachment process.

— Mark Riley

… Trash collection part of city’s litter problem

Thanks to Susan and Mike for all their efforts in keeping Fulton Heights clean. I seem them out daily cleaning our neighborhood.

— Julie Apone

An anti-litter plan needs to be started in the elementary and middle schools to guilt the parents and adults to stop littering.

—Shawn Campion

Blotter: Two vehicles broken into at Innes Street Market

I stared down a panhandler walking between Old Navy and Dollar Tree until he left. Wearing a winter coat with long hood, there’s our problem.

— Terry Pie

… Closure of Faith, Enochville elementary schools

Meanwhile, Woodleaf Elementary School is a pile of rubble and, while the community grieves for the loss of the school, we were hoping to at least keep the gym as part of a community park.

We believe it is a historic structure and would be an asset to our area. Sadly, not one person has had a return phone call from the board of education or Rowan-Salisbury School.

— Cyndy Ward

Landis sees fund balance grow to state’s …

The Landis budget that former manager Roger Hosey worked on was praised by the state but you know who will be taking the credit.

— Rebecca Copley

My response is unfortunately necessarily restrained due to the on-going investigation – but I can say the town’s finances were an absolute mess when I took over as interim finance officer in February 2019. The changes we implemented from February forward were transformative, as the Local Government Commission staff will attest.

— Roger Hosey

School board looks at new $12.3 million contract …

The same iPads can be purchased from a local Best Buy for $250 each without a quantity discount.

The total cost of 20,800 iPads would be $5.2 million. I know the system will say “maintenance and software,” but the software updates occur on their own and to purchase a few hundred extra would save the system millions — literally $7.1 million.

— John Davis

… Replace valedictorian and salutatorian honors

This is Rowan-Salisbury School’s version of one giant participation trophy.

— Vera Cope

Why would you take this achievement away from students that have worked so hard for 4 years?

— Sheri Lyerly Halpin

Lt. Gov. Forest tells Rowan County gathering …

Run Forrest Run? Seriously?

Did anybody tell him where that slogan comes from?

— Anthony Smith
