Area Sports Briefs: North’s White getting offers; Catawba’s Raper honored

From staff reports

North Rowan’s 6-foot-10 sophomore Brandon White received basketball scholarship offers from Virginia Tech and Western Kentucky on Tuesday.

Many more schools, including Texas and Tennessee, are interested.

White played sparingly for the Cavaliers as a varsity freshman but averaged a team-high 12 points per game as a sophomore with frequent double-doubles and usually added a half-dozen blocked shots.

He made All-Rowan County first team and All-Yadkin Valley Conference for a 22-8 club.

White still has some developing to do, but he’s unusually athletic for a 6-10 player. He’s very mobile, runs the floor well, catches the ball well, in the post or on the move, and has plenty of potential.

College baseball

Catawba third baseman Jackson Raper was named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the final week of the 2020 season. The conference office announced the awards on Tuesday.

Raper, who played at Robinson High in Concord, led the Catawba Indians to a pair of non-conference wins over Ohio Dominican and California (Pa.) last week. He was nearly unstoppable at the plate as he batted .800 with four home runs, a double, six runs scored and 10 RBIs.
